AN ELEGY ON THE DEATH OF MRS. ANN-- H---PN, DECEASED AUGUST,
1742.
When winged Fame with brazen trump,
Proclaim'd aloud with doleful roar,
And spread the mournful sound afar,
`That lovely Anna is no more;'
. . . [2 more verses]
Th' inchanting pipe no more delights,
Nor cool Favonus' balmy breeze:
The swains no more rehearse their notes,
Nor zephyrs murmur thro' the trees.
. . . [12 more verses]
The beauty of the Tyrian Queen,
That so embellish'd Mare's song,
. . . [2 more lines, another verse]
True wisdom flavour'd her discourse,
Such sprightly reason ne'er was heard;
These surely must remain unsung,
Till death restores the Grecian bard.
. . . [5 more verses]
No, no, the muse with mournful sound,
Shall often strike the trembling string;
Sweet Philomel shall moan her death,
And concave rocks with sorrow ring.
. . . [4 more verses]
The shepherds leave their fleecy care,
And nymphs that haunt the rural plains,
Transported, drink the musick in,
And loud applaud th'unrival'd strains.
Ye swains that form'd the list'ning throng,
And virgins that compos'd the dance,
Whilst Anna rais'd the tuneful song,
Ye can attest our innocence.
. . . [7 more verses]
See the melodious feather'd race,
With plumage dull, bemoaning sit;
E'er while they charm'd the tuneful grove,
Now their harmonious notes forget.
. . . [8 more verses]
Where myriads bright surround the throne,
And sound on harps caelestial strains;
Where lives the God that bled for thee;
For there the Great Redeemer reigns:
Where bright innumerable hosts
Their anthems raise incessantly,
And heav'nly musick rings throughout
The regions of felicity.
. . . [Signed] per Juvenum.
